With the NSW spring school holidays running from 28 September to 9 October and the October long weekend approaching, now is a good time to give your caravan, camper or trailer a quick check.
A little preparation before you leave can help prevent hardware problems, unsecured gear and other unwelcome surprises on the road.

Check Handles, Hinges and Catches
Test the handles, hinges and catches on doors, storage boxes and access panels.
Look for rust, looseness, misalignment or components that no longer operate smoothly. Tighten loose fixings and replace worn hardware before it causes problems away from home.
Inspect Seals and Compartments
Check the rubber seals and pinchweld around doors, windows, lids and storage compartments.
Cracked, flattened or loose seals can allow rain, dust and insects inside. Make sure each seal makes consistent contact without preventing the door or lid from closing properly.
Test Gas Struts and Drawer Slides
Gas struts should support doors and lids without sagging or dropping unexpectedly.
Open and close storage drawers several times to check that the drawer slides move smoothly. Locking slides should engage correctly when fully open and closed.
Check Your Trailer Lights
Test your indicators, brake lights, tail lights and marker lights before packing the vehicle. Check that each light is securely mounted and inspect cables and plugs for visible damage or loose connections.
If replacements are required, Ovesco stocks LED lighting for caravans, campers, trailers and other vehicles.
Secure Your Gear
Inspect tie-down rings and anchor points for bending, corrosion or movement. Make sure equipment is properly restrained and cannot shift while travelling.
It is also worth checking that externally mounted items, water tanks and storage boxes remain securely attached.
Review Your Safety Equipment
Make sure your fire extinguisher, fire blanket, first aid kit and other safety equipment are easy to reach, not buried beneath luggage.
Check that each item is in serviceable condition and replace anything that is damaged, expired or missing.
Get Ready Before You Leave
