The top spots to sail in Australia this summer

5 November 2022 The top spots to sail in Australia this summer

In search of paradise? Luckily, in our pretty stunning country, you never have to look too far. Australia is known for some of the world’s best spots to set sail if boating is your adventure activity of choice. Not sure where to jet off to? Here are some of the best spots to get out on those crystal-clear waters this sunny season!

Some fun facts for boaties

  • We have a whopping 35,000km of shoreline
  • Australia is home to 1000 river estuaries
  • The world’s largest coral reef is, of course, the Great Barrier Reef, stretching 1,429 miles over an area of approximately 133,000 square miles
  • 8222 is the number of offshore islands surrounding us. No wonder we are called ‘the island continent!’.

The best spots to set sail

1. The Whitsundays for picture-perfect beaches

The turquoise-blue waters and dazzling white sand of the Whitsundays will truly take your breath away. You’ll be blown away by the super salty Tasman sea, the blazing sun as temperatures soar and lush jungles providing gorgeous green relief. The region includes 74 islands fragmented from the side of Conway National Park. Whitsunday Island itself is home to Whitehaven beach, one of the most stunning in the world. You can also boat over to Hamilton Island, a mecca of upscale resorts, bars and restaurants. Fancy!

2. Lake Macquarie, close to Newcastle, NSW

Many of the team at Bulbeck Group HQ in Newcastle live in the region of Lake Macquarie, so we couldn’t help but mention our beautiful lake! Our lovely part of the country is well and truly proves that you don’t need open oceans to enjoy a spectacular day on the water.

In total, Lake Macquarie spans a huge 110 square kilometres - that’s nearly twice the size of Sydney Harbour! There is plenty of space for boats of all shapes and sizes. You’ll be able to check out koala-filled reserves, calm white-sand beaches, spectacular hiking trails and loads of amazing conservation areas. The nature-lover’s dream and a great spot for families. We rate it!

3. Margaret River, WA for rugged wilderness

Although known more for its wine and surfing culture, the Margaret River region of Western Australia is actually rated by sailing enthusiasts too. You’ll see some wonderful rugged shorelines of wild headlands, wide beaches and impressive reefs. The forceful swell of the Indian Ocean will well and truly make you feel alive. Pods of humpback whales are also visible in some parts of the year. The main jetty is located at Busselton.

4. Tasmania

Tassie truly is the boat enthusiast’s dream. The whole island offers opportunities galore but we love northern Tasmania in the calmer summer months. There are lots of islands to hop between at the southern end of Bass Strait from Cape Barren to Hunter Island. Expect ancient rainforests and beautiful rugged headlines. Each and every island offers something unique.

5. Kangaroo Island, South Australia

This truly special corner of Australia is reachable by ferry and is renowned for cruising and sailing. You’ll be blown away by the native wildlife, coastal rock formations and protected nature reserves. It really is worth the trip!

6. Barrington Coast, NSW

Located a few hours north of Newcastle, the Barrington Coast is a true gem. Home to fantastic little town centres like Forster, Pacific Palms, Old Bar and Gloucester. Think Bryon Bay but less discovered.

The calm turquoise clear waters of Walis Lake, which separates the twin towns of Forster and Tuncurry, is quite literally a boatie’s dream. Marvel at dolphins, turtles and rays, explore nearby islands or laze on the powered white sands. Surrounded by Wallingat National Park on the west and Booti Booti National Park on the east, the pristine waters are fed by the Wallamba River, Coolongolook River and Pipers Creek. The lake is approximately 25 kilometres long and nine kilometres wide. Indulge in some local oysters following your boat adventures!

Do you have your life jackets ready?

If you’re boating this season, you must have a lifejacket for all passengers. Inflatable lifejackets are preferred for sailing and high-speed boats.

A lifejacket in good working order could save your life.

ovesco is also the Hunter Region’s only authorised lifejacket repair centre. Have your inflatable life jackets serviced by our experts.
